Living the Life Aquatic Does Presupposition Accommodation Mandate Dynamic Semantics?

چکیده
What should a semantic theory for a language tell us? A traditional answer goes back at least to Frege and Russell: • The Static Conception of Semantics (Preliminary Version): A semantic theory should assign a proposition, conceived of as some carrier of meaning that can play the role of truth condition determination, to each (or at least each declarative) sentence. A competing answer has emerged from a multiplicity of pressures from work in formal semantics over the last thirty-odd years: c © 2006

Presupposition Accommodation as Exception Handling
Van der Sandt’s algorithm for handling presupposition is based on a “presupposition as anaphora” paradigm and is expressed in the realm of Kamp’s DRT. In recent years, we have proposed a typetheoretic rebuilding of DRT that allows Montague’s semantics to be combined with discourse dynamics. Here we explore van der Sandt’s theory along the line of this formal framework. It then results that pres...
متن کاملThe Kinematics of Presupposition
The Context Change Potential Model of presuppositions, due to Heim, Kartunnen and Stalnaker, is examined in the light of recent work in dynamic semantics. It is shown that some phenomena concerning the interaction of presupposition and quantification, which had been thought troublesome for the Context Change Model, can be handled without invoking local or intermediate accommodation. A model of ...
متن کاملThe Semantics and Pragmatics of Presupposition
In this paper, we offer a novel analysis of presuppositions, paving particular attention to the interaction between the knowledge resources that are required to interpret them. The analysis has two main features. First, we capture an analogy between presuppositions, anaphora and scope ambiguity (cf. van der Sandt 1992), by utilizing semantic underspecification (c£ Reyle 1993). Second, resolving...
متن کاملPresupposition Accommodation in Update Semantics
The study of presuppositions lies on the border of semantics and pragmatics. It concerns information, assumed to be part of the discourse context by the speaker, as apparent in the syntactic form of the utterance. Missing presupposed information will normally be lled in by the hearer, provided it is compatible with the context. My thesis tries to characterise this process of presupposition acco...
متن کاملA Partial Account of Presupposition Projection
In this paper it is shown how a partial semantics for presuppositions can be given which is empirically more satisfactory than its predecessors, and how this semantics can be integrated with a technically sound, compositional grammar in the Montagovian fashion. Additionally, it is argued that the classical objection to partial accounts of presupposition projection, namely that they lack ‘flexib...
